You don\u2019t need to understand electromagnetic fields to flip a switch, but you <em>do<\/em> need to understand the switch. The same is true of AI. You don\u2019t need to know how large language models (LLMs) are trained, but you do need to know how to use them productively.<\/p>\n<p>AI will increasingly become an everyday utility. The professionals who know how to plug in (i.e. how to leverage AI to write, analyze, build, and automate) will outperform their peers, land better opportunities, and stay ahead as the bar rises.<\/p>\n<p>The key: small daily experiments that build compound knowledge. So, let\u2019s walk through a four-stage, 30-day plan to becoming AI-capable &#8211; the first step toward becoming AI-native.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Note:<\/strong> This framework was originally introduced in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gCb1zT2KrOk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">episode five, season six of the A.CRE Audio Series<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Stage 1: Foundation (Days 1\u20135)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Secure Your Tools. <\/strong>Sign up for a paid LLM account (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.). Paid plans give access to better models and larger context windows\u2014important for any serious experimentation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Learn the Basics. <\/strong>Spend 1\u20132 hours understanding context windows, tokens, model types, and prompting strategies. Ask your LLM to explain them in plain English. If you understand how the model \u201cthinks,\u201d you\u2019ll write better prompts and get better results.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Start the Habit. <\/strong>Commit to using your LLM every day. Summarize documents, write quick drafts, brainstorm ideas\u2014anything you already do, just faster. The goal is fluency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Stage 2: Personal Tinkering (Days 6\u201315)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Test New Tools. <\/strong>Explore 3\u20135 platforms that spark your interest. A few to try:\n<ul>\n<li>v0.dev for coding UI<\/li>\n<li>Framer AI for websites<\/li>\n<li>Lindy.ai or Zapier\/Make for automations<\/li>\n<li>Custom GPT \/ Claude Project \/ Claude Gem for custom builders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Build for Yourself. <\/strong>Pick a recurring task in your life or work and build something to make it easier. A custom email writer in your tone. A property report generator. A model documentation tool. Anything.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Expect Failure. <\/strong>Most early builds will be rough or break. That\u2019s the point. The wins come through repetition and refinement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Stage 3: Build for Others (Days 16\u201325)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ask Around. <\/strong>Find someone who wishes they could automate or simplify something in their day-to-day. Ask them what they hate doing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prototype a Fix. <\/strong>Use what you\u2019ve learned to build something useful, even if it\u2019s scrappy. This stage teaches you how to think through use cases beyond your own.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Go Deeper: Build an Agent. <\/strong>Try creating a simple AI agent. Tools like OpenAI\u2019s custom GPTs or Digital Ocean\u2019s open-source agents are a great start. Upload a knowledge base, write some system instructions, and wire it to a workflow (Google Sheets, Notion, Slack, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Stage 4: Teach and Share (Days 26\u201330)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Document Your Journey. <\/strong>Record a demo or write a short guide walking through what you\u2019ve built. This forces clarity of thought\u2014and helps others follow the same path.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Teach One Person. <\/strong>Sit down with a friend or colleague and teach them what a context window is, how to prompt well, or how to build a custom GPT. Teaching cements your own expertise.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Position Yourself as AI-Capable. <\/strong>By this point, you\u2019ll be the AI person in the room.
